British line infantry
Before Napoleon, the French Army was run down and slack. Uniforms were all completely different. Most soldiers were just wearing rags. The army had no moral and no fighting practice and no real pay for months. They didn't have anything to fight for. Then Napoelon stepped in. He gave them moral and proper uniforms and taught them how to march in formations. But mostly he gave them their first pay in money for years. Now they had moral and became organised.
The uniform is very formal. The helmet is typical since Napoleon became Emperor. Before it was the famous tri-hat. The blue coat was a defined French Colour after the revolution. The pictures above show the elaborate and well presented uniforms of the Napoleonic Wars.
Napoleonic Flags
Flags in the Napoleonic Era are what formed the flags of the modern world. But in the Napoleonic Wars it wasnt what the flag looked like, it was how they were presented. The men who held them were amoung the best dressed. The flag pole was gold and the flag had gold trimming. Tassles hanged down from the amazing golden eagle which was the symbol for Imperial France after Napoleon became Emperor.
